What is a layette?

This is a question we get asked all the time! Whether you're  first time parents, grandparents who need a refresher course on newborn clothing, or someone just looking for a gift, we have you covered!

Think of Layette as a baby's first set of clothing.  Traditionally, new parents would shop for a baby's layette--sometimes purchasing both for a boy and a girl and once the baby was born, they would pick up their box of items from their local baby store. Times have certainly changed in how layette is purchased but many of the same rules of thumb apply.

Typically, this new first wardrobe was comprised of the softest pieces of clothing so as to not irritate baby's skin. Our number one suggestion is to opt for cotton items as they are breathable, and if you can, look for pima cotton pieces as those are so soft and luxurious and are perfect for a newborn's skin.

Included in the layette was also the most coveted piece of clothing--the take home outfit. Things to consider for a take home outfit (aside from something made of pima cotton) is an outfit that is comfortable on the baby. We offer both one piece footies and 3 piece take home sets which feature a kimono style top and pants along with a matching hat.  The kimono style is not only soft but is easy for changing the baby. Most importantly though, is to make sure whatever outfit you choose will work with the harness of the car seat. You don't want to take that baby home without the proper attire!

And don't forget a hat! Regardless of season or weather, babies need a hat. They cannot regulate their temperature so the hat is an essential piece of the wardrobe, even in the summer! Many hopsitals require the baby to leave to with a hat on.

We always suggest a take home outfit, several footies and gowns for easy changes, receiving blankets, bib and burp cloths and undershirts like a onesie to keep the baby warm. Having several pieces on hand will help so that you don't have to do laundry every 20 minutes because you ran out of clothes. And those newborns do go through a lot of clothes. While they may only fit into them for a short time, those early moments are critical for making sure they are warm and cozy and in clothing that fits and isn't causing irritation on their skin.  One other must have is towels for bath time. Do yourself a favor and skip the little newborn or toddler towels. They will not last long and you need a lot of fabric to help cuddle them up after bath time. Check out our full size hooded towels that will be used for years to come and give you lots of room to grow.

Whether you are searching for that complete layette selection for your newborn or that perfect picture worthy take home outfit, we have you covered. Our gorgeous pima cotton fabric is a must have for a newborn. We also offer coordinating bibs, footies, gowns and monogrammed baby blankets to complete the look.
